Lens Implant Surgeries for Vision Correction
What are Lens Implant Surgeries?
Lens implant surgeries are advanced medical solutions for patients who are not suitable candidates for laser vision correction, such as those with very high refractive errors or thin corneas. These procedures involve implanting artificial lenses inside the eye to correct vision, offering long-term clarity without relying on glasses or contact lenses.
At Dr. Mohamed Nasr’s Eye Center, we provide the latest techniques in lens implantation with maximum safety and precision, ensuring excellent outcomes for our patients.
Types of Lens Implant Surgeries
1. ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)
Designed for patients with severe myopia (high nearsightedness) who cannot undergo LASIK or PRK.
A biocompatible lens is implanted inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens, to correct vision.
The procedure is quick, reversible, and provides high-quality vision, especially in low-light conditions.
2. Multifocal Lens Implants
Advanced lenses that provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances.
Ideal for patients suffering from presbyopia (age-related difficulty focusing on near objects).
Helps reduce or completely eliminate the need for reading glasses after surgery.

What are lens implant surgeries and why are they used?
Lens implant surgeries involve replacing the eye’s natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL) to correct conditions like cataracts, severe farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia.
What types of IOLs are available?
Common types include:
Monofocal IOLs: correct a single distance.
Toric IOLs: correct astigmatism plus one focal distance.
Multifocal and Extended-Depth IOLs: offer good vision at multiple ranges.
What about accommodative and light-adjustable lenses?
Accommodative IOLs shift slightly to improve near vision.
Light-Adjustable Lenses (LALs) can be fine-tuned post-surgery to optimize vision based on patient feedback.
What is an implantable Collamer lens (ICL)?
ICLs are phakic lenses placed in front of the natural lens—ideal for high prescriptions or when laser surgery isn’t suitable. The procedure is typically quick and reversible.
How is the lens implant surgery performed?
With local anesthesia via drops, a small corneal incision is made. The natural lens is removed — if cloudy — and replaced with a foldable IOL inserted through the incision. Permanent, yet removable if needed.
How long is recovery?
The surgery usually takes under 30 minutes per eye; most patients return home the same day. Full healing occurs within weeks, though vision improvements often begin sooner.
What are the risks and complications?
Rare but possible complications include infection, increased eye pressure, lens displacement, retinal detachment, and posterior capsular opacification (“after-cataract”), which can be treated with a quick laser procedure.
Can I still need glasses after surgery?
Many patients achieve great vision without glasses, especially with multifocal or toric IOLs. However, some may still require glasses for fine tasks like reading, especially in low light.
Can the implanted lens be replaced later?
s—if needed, the IOL can be exchanged for another lens to adjust vision preferences or respond to future advancements.
How is the best IOL chosen for me?
Dr. Nasr will consider your visual needs, lifestyle, eye measurements, and refractive conditions to recommend the most suitable lens—be it monofocal, multifocal, toric, accommodative, or ICL.
