Fundus Examination for Newborns and Premature Infants
What is the Fundus Examination for Newborns and Premature Infants?
The eyes of newborns and premature infants are among the most sensitive organs in early life. This is why performing a fundus examination within the first weeks after birth is crucial to detect any potential eye conditions that could affect vision in the future.
At Dr. Mohamed Nasr’s Eye Center – Consultant in Ophthalmology and Eye Surgery, we provide fundus examinations for newborns using the latest medical equipment designed specifically for infants. Dr. Mohamed Nasr personally supervises every step of the examination, supported by his academic expertise, clinical experience, and a professional team of trained assistants to ensure the highest level of precision and comfort for both the child and the family.
What the Examination Includes?
Fundus Examination: To detect early signs of retinal or optic nerve disorders.
Diagnosis of Congenital Eye Diseases: Such as congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, or retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
Use of Specialized Pediatric Devices: Ensuring safety and comfort during the procedure.
Performed Under Mild Local Anesthetic Drops: Making the process completely safe and painless.

What is a fundus examination for newborns?
It is a detailed evaluation of the retina and optic nerve to ensure the eyes are healthy and developing normally.
Why is this exam especially important for premature infants?
Premature babies are at higher risk of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), which can lead to vision loss or blindness if not detected and treated early.
At what age should the exam be performed?
Usually between 4 and 9 weeks after birth, depending on gestational age and medical history.
What eye conditions can this exam detect?
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), retinal hemorrhages, congenital cataracts, optic nerve abnormalities, and other serious eye issues.
Is the exam painful or uncomfortable for the baby?
No. It is a safe and gentle procedure, sometimes with mild temporary discomfort due to dilation drops or light exposure.
Will the baby’s pupils need to be dilated?
Yes, safe and specially formulated eye drops are used to gently dilate the pupils for a clearer view of the retina.
What technology is used in the examination?
Advanced digital imaging systems such as RetCam provide high-resolution pictures of the retina for accurate diagnosis.
How long does the procedure take?
The exam itself usually takes about 10–20 minutes, though the entire visit may last longer due to preparation and pupil dilation.
How often should premature babies have follow-up exams?
Dr. Mohamed Nasr will review the results with the parents, explain any findings, and recommend follow-up visits or treatment if necessary.
What happens after the exam?
Depending on the results, follow-up may be required every 1–2 weeks until the retina is fully developed and risk of ROP is resolved.
